New Challenges

I am happy to announce that there are some big changes for me on the horizon: beginning in September, I will be stepping away from the classroom as I take on one of two Math Coordinator positions (for grades 7-12) in my school board.

It is a one-year, interim position where I get to work with other teachers in the board and help them achieve their numeracy, inquiry and innovation goals in their math classes. I'm beyond excited about the new challenges this will bring, and the new perspectives I will be able to bring back to the classroom a year from now.

  1. Good news for you and the teachers you will work with... but I can't help feeling a bit sorry for those kids that would have had you as a teacher next year. But they will meet a recharged *you* later in their HS career. I don't know if I shared this with you before, but if so, it might be a good time to remind you.
Read it and then rewrite it for the Math class. I wrote it the year after I retired (and had had a chance to think about the mysteries of teaching). Since then, I have become more and more convinced that it expresses a real truth about the way people think and the consequences of that in school, and in life.

    Best wishes,
    Doug

    1. Thank you, Doug! You hadn't before mentioned what you had written - I'll definitely check it out :) I'm trying to not think about how different it will be, but am really looking forward to trying something new (and recharging, as you mentioned!). Thank you again for sharing your learnings!

  3. Congratulations! From what I've seen from the amazing learning coordinators in the board close to me, I can't think of a more qualified person to be in that type of role! You have so many great ideas, know how to implement them, and are more than happy to lend a helping hand. Good luck and I hope you're able to blog about your experiences!

    1. Thanks, Alyssa! I'm definitely looking forward to being able to try (and help others try) many new things. I will definitely keep blogging... and maybe even trying out new social media avenues, too!
